I need to make bread for m quilt group potluck lunch. I am going to try BrianjWood's tomato basil bread. It call for only one tablespoon of fresh basil in a loaf that uses 6 cups of flour. Thinking I need to increase that a bit. Will let you know how it turns out.

We had kimchi fried rice. I know, when my husband showed me the recipe from the NYTs I thought, yeah, never! But we found some mild kimchi at Costco and it turned out very well. Infinitely changeable ingredients, the only musts are kimchi, rice and eggs. Any kind of rice will do. The recipe called for Spam but ham or any cold cut will work or skip the meat altogether. If the rice is already cooked dinner is on the table in 15 minutes. I misread the recipe the first time and scrambled the eggs in with the hot rice instead of frying them separately and serving on top but we liked it that way so continue to do so.

Good to know your experiment worked Len. I love white chocolate.

Took a little breather from sewing and made beef stew and served it over fresh baked cornbread. What a winner! Even my two year old granddaughter loved it. Thanks Joan for such a yummy idea.

Olive-Gruyere rolls sound wonderful! Yesterday I made yogurt and we had breakfast for dinner. Eggs, cottage potatoes, mushrooms and breakfast sausage. My younger son is getting married next month and I am more focused on finishing three flower girl dresses than I am on cooking.

That is quite the pedigree for a recipe! This is one of the things I love about baking BA. How it connects to cooks/bakers in our past, both family and friends.

With the addition of 3/4 tsp baking powder and one tsp vanilla, this dough is exactly the same as the one I used for the gateau basque. Interesting technique, leveling the cookies with a microplane grater.

Janiebakes I just added the syrup not anything else.

                      Thank you Joan.

I baked the gateau basque I started on Saturday. Took the rolled out dough from the fridge and let it set 10 minutes. Recipe called for cherry jam but I only had black raspberry so used that between the pastry layers. Rolled it to 9.5 inches instead of the 8 inches called for but used the same amount of jam. Took it to the potluck picnic. I cut it into small squares instead of the 1/6th of a cake slice it showed in the NYTs recipe. The pastry is pretty much a sugar cookie. With jam sandwiched inside it is plenty sweet and rich. No way could you eat a whole slice.

Last might we met friends in a park for a picnic potluck. We brought caprese salad with home grown basil. Tonight was spinach salad from Costco.

Joan, did you have to adjust the amount of flour in the recipe because of adding the Karo syrup? Chewy sugar cookies sound so good.

Seems today is mostly about prepping. I made yogurt, cucumber salad using only cukes we grew, and the pastry for the gateau basque. Tacos for dinner.

Baker Aunt, Ballpark makes a smoked turkey white meat hot dog that is pretty good. Might see if it is available in your area.
