I think that combo should work fine in the recipe for the lemon braid. The consistency of the filling would be about the same. It sure sounds delicious.

ItalianCook, that used to be my favorite breakfast! But we never have French Toast any more, partly because we love the blueberries in the pancakes, and I can't quite imagine the taste of rye, or garlic and herb, gruyere cheese, etc. bread in French toast. I checked out the KAF recipe you linked to; not a lot of positive comments about the results. It sounds like lots of butter to grease the pan is a required, and that is a good! idea.
December 17, 2023 at 2:02 pm in reply to: What are you Cooking the Week of December 17, 2023? #41328Christmas dinner will be a spiral sliced ham, pineapple rings, cheesy scalloped potatoes, fresh green beans, peas (for those few who only eat DelMonte green beans out of a can!), broccoli salad, and either garlic knots, or onion-wild rice rolls or ??? Dessert will be a couple of cookie trays for after the sharing of gifts. We'll have both children and five grandchildren with spouses/significant others.
I have already made, and in the freezer ready to bake: Best Chewy Peanut Butter, Oatmeal Lemon Sugar, Molasses Ginger, Orange Cinnamon Chip, Cranberry Coconut cookies, and will be making Buckeye Bars and Chocolate Toffee this week. Christmas Eve (when we have our family gathering here for dinner and gifts) I'll make some kind of rolls, not sure exactly what yet.
Dinner tonight was breakfast sausages and blueberry pancakes. I made the "baked pancakes" recipe; making one 9 x 12 pan of pancakes is so much easier then flipping a dozen round circles on a griddle. I wish I knew about this back when my two children, and their many friends were living at our home!
I also made BakerAunt's Mostly Whole Wheat Maple Buttermilk Bread this morning.
Those look really good, Mike!
Tomorrow King Arthur Flour is having their once a year Friends and Family sale! 20% off most everything (not appliances and a few other things, like my Sir Lancelot or Sir Galahad wholesale flours, etc) I have a very short list. Fromaggi Italiano which I have never tried, the Lemon Crumbles (I think that's the name) that I do like. I'll probably get some Harvest Grains or 6 Grain flour, maybe some other mixed grains. Their whole grain flour now seems to be around $16.95- $18.95 for 3 pounds. This is my only chance all year to shop their sale, but I really don't need much of anything, my pantry is pretty well stocked.
December 13, 2023 at 6:12 pm in reply to: What are you Cooking the Week of December 10, 2023? #41301I made a pizza for dinner, with sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, black olives, cheddar, and mozzarella.
That was really fun to watch!
December 12, 2023 at 6:13 pm in reply to: What are you Cooking the Week of December 10, 2023? #41288Mike, we had spaghetti last night also - the first time in several years!! Tonight I made chicken cacciatore, served on rice.
I made cookies today, an experiment. These were drop cookies, made with 3 tablespoons of Tang drink mix for the orange flavoring, plus about 1/2 cup of orange peels I had candied, and about 1/3 cup of cinnamon chips that I made and had in the freezer for a couple of months. The cinnamon chips did not stand up well to be stirred into the stiff cookie dough. They crumbled, although not quite as fine as powdered cinnamon. The flavor is really good, but I'd prefer the impact of small cinnamon chips scattered throughout. I do think the home-made chips would be fine in a muffin or sweet bread batter, which is not as stiff and likely to crumble the chips.
December 10, 2023 at 6:34 pm in reply to: What are you Cooking the Week of December 10, 2023? #41272We had leftover leftovers -- turkey soup and turkey salad sandwiches. We are predicted to get 12-18 inches of snow by mid-morning. But it's 44* here now, and not predicted to get below 35*. I have to wonder where meteorologists get their training these days!
Yes, that ricotta-cranberry sauce pizza sounds especially good. I love to read about your creative baking, Skeptic!
I cooked our turkey breast remains and carcass with veggies for soup. Most of the meat I made into turkey salad with celery and onions for sandwiches on rye bread that I pulled from the freezer. A perfect meal for an evening with the temp at 20* and going down.
