Took longer due to some supply issues but I finally got my tomatoes started indoors under the lights, I started 40 pots worth, will probably plant about 32 of them.
April 5, 2026 at 12:10 pm #48979I'm looking forward to growing my herbs and lone tomato plant. I learned a lesson last year. I bought several raised long planters on wheels. I planted the tarragon along with parsley and rosemary. The tarragon ended up tasting like parsley! Won't make that mistake again.
April 18, 2026 at 6:32 pm #49040I got 3 rows of leeks and onions in the ground today. About 45 leek plants and 15 onions.
I also got a big (300 foot) roll of 6 foot wide landscape cloth delivered today.
April 18, 2026 at 8:06 pm #49042We have a freeze warning for tonight. We are having to wait to start plants until we get back from my bonus daughter's wedding.
April 28, 2026 at 7:16 pm #49117I planted 40 pots of tomatoes and I think 34 of them are doing well enough for transplanting into the garden. (I'll probably only plant about 28.) 85% germination rate is a bit lower than normal.
I posted the latest picking from the indoor tomato hydroponic system in the cooking thread but will post it here as well. Not sure why I'm getting so many tiny tomatoes, probably a nutritional deficiency of some kind. I plan to rip out the current indoor tomato plants some time in June but they keep setting enough new fruit that I'm not in a big hurry, though I want the next set going by mid-July so they start producing around the time the outdoor garden shuts down for the season.
Some of my older cages (at least 35 years old) are wearing out, so I bought a 50 foot roll of concrete mesh to make some new ones.

I also want to plant a couple winter squash, Buttercup. I have the seeds, am thinking about a good spot for it.

May 10, 2026 at 9:49 pm #49203Cwc, one of my neighbors noticed that my container was unused the past couple of years and offered to buy it from me. I had an extra and gave it to her with the request that she get the plants for me. She got them from a local hardware store. They had just put them out and looked pretty nice.
I didn't know about Gesthemane so I looked it up. It looks interesting.
May 11, 2026 at 8:00 pm #49214Len, it's been there a long time - it started out small and just kept growing. We have a lot of snowbirds from the city and northern suburbs and they all seem to go there. When Will was in statuary last year, they would deliver all over the city. It's quite an operation - I got to see it last year when I was there.
May 12, 2026 at 8:32 am #49215I'm hoping to get my tomato plants in the ground later this week. But I have to finish building a few more cages first.
May 21, 2026 at 12:54 pm #49277Cages built, plants outside to harden off a bit, hopefully it'll be dry enough to put them in the garden tomorrow or Saturday. It always seems to rain when it's time to put the tomato plants in the ground.
May 21, 2026 at 2:33 pm #49280Now that we are done dashing west and north, my husband has been planting the garden. On Saturday, I bought a Dester Indiana tomato plant, two purple cherry tomato plants, and a red cherry tomato plant, along with a dill plant. Those are in the garden. We had four organic potatoes that were past eating, so my husband planted those. Two years ago, we got a nice potato crop; last year's did not do well. My husband also started some Dester tomatoes, but those are not large enough for transplant yet. The green beans are planted. The cucumbers for pickles are planted. In addition to the dill plant I bought, we had some volunteer from last year come up. We are also trying fairy tale pumpkin again. My husband is considering planting some Early Girls tomatoes.
The garden was a bit slowed down when we got back from our trip to the wedding in San Diego because Scott started hoeing, and the ground suddenly exploded as two larger baby bunnies and two smaller ones bounded out of a nest. Scott managed to put the two smaller ones back, but the best he could do with the larger ones was herd them away from our road on which people drive too fast. He left the garden alone for five days or so after that, then discovered that the bunnies are all gone.
May 21, 2026 at 5:06 pm #49281I am glad you are so careful about the bunnies!
May 23, 2026 at 7:33 pm #49292I got my tomatoes planted today, 36 cages of them, 14 different varieties.
