I have a large container of the Gold yeast in the freezer. I have about finished up the active yeast I have in the freezer, but I have a 2 lb. bag ready to open and divide between two other containers. So, I'm set for yeast.
I, like Aaron, am wondering if people are just grabbing stuff off the shelves.
I'm hoping BRM will have whole wheat flour available before I need it again. I need to check to see exactly how much I have.
March 24, 2020 at 11:19 am #22306Life is Good has come out with some T-shirts in response to Covid19. My favorite reads:
"The Greatest Generation stormed the beaches of Normandy. We've been asked to sit on a couch. We got this."
Of course, there are still a lot of people who have not got the concept that they should STAY HOME. (Pictures of crowded beaches come to mind.)
We are also asking a lot of our medical professionals, delivery people, supermarket and pharmacy clerks who are not able to "sit on a couch" and are responding heroically.
March 24, 2020 at 4:46 pm #22308I was able to score a 5 pound bag of 365 brand whole wheat flour from Whole Foods today. I think that sets me pretty well for flours for a while. Also scored some tp from Amazon. I transitioning into relax mode now.
March 24, 2020 at 11:12 pm #22316After checking 4 stores, I finally got some KA whole wheat flour. The first two stores were closed, the third had sugar but no flour, and the last had whole wheat flour but not white. I'm in the Washington DC area, and the article that Mike reposted applies to me. The last two stores didn't have any yeast. There was only the empty cardboard display boxes which used to have envelopes of yeast.
A friend of mine said that she had to bake with the last of her 2 year old yeast and it was working very slowly.March 25, 2020 at 10:41 am #22332Putting this on two different threads. Just received an email from KAF that flours are back in stock!
March 25, 2020 at 12:38 pm #22335That's good news, Aaron. Hopefully things will settle down now.
On a related note, I received the KAF order that I placed last week. I'm set for a while.
March 26, 2020 at 10:55 am #22363There have been a few reports of people intentionally coughing on items or people in stores. In one case, a store had to throw out $35,000 in food.
These are being treated harshly by authorities, including the possibility of charges of making terroristic threats.
March 26, 2020 at 12:06 pm #22364I had insomnia last night. I didn't want to wake up the house, so I didn't bake. Instead, I spent my time on KAF's website. Each and every item I clicked on that they sell had a quantity limit of 2. I had never before seen that. Do you think that's because of the new interest in baking during Covid-19 and online sellers exploiting it?
March 26, 2020 at 9:21 pm #22382I hear Germany is advising its citizens to start stockpiling sausages and cheeses.
It's their Wurst Käse scenario!
Thanks, I'll be home all spring, it appears.
March 27, 2020 at 7:59 am #22389Groans and Chuckles. I shamelessly told it to my husband this morning.
March 27, 2020 at 3:02 pm #22396It's nice to know that one grocery store chain (in San Antonio) was thinking ahead when government people were not:
March 30, 2020 at 12:33 pm #22466The local town government has just issued a request that people coming into the area from other places please observe a fourteen day quarantine period. While I am glad the town did so, the request is starting about two weeks late. Our area has a lot of summer residents, and with people working from home and kids e-learning, some have decided to come here to ride out the pandemic. I understand doing so, but the number of people suddenly running around suggests that many were not thinking about if they might be carrying the virus. As a lot of people come in from Chicago and Indianapolis and suburbs thereof, both hot spots, that is worrying. So far, there are no known cases in town, but there are three in the county.
March 30, 2020 at 2:57 pm #22470CT has had an influx on New Yorkers. Towns of a few thousand full time residents now have thousands of people extra. Our governor and town officials have asked that these people voluntarily quarantine themselves for two weeks. But it's also straining resources that are already taxed. Plus, many of the businesses that profit from out-of-towners are closed or running in greatly reduced capacity.
People have talked about restaurants closing from a business standpoint but no one has talked about the civic loss of these businesses. They are some of the most generous people we have. Despite being low-margin they are the first to volunteer time, money, space, and services to the various causes around the region.
April 1, 2020 at 5:19 pm #22530Governor of Georgia just extended closing of all schools for the remainder of this school year.
