Every day, I toss my coffee grounds and tea onto my azaleas just out my north kitchen door. I bought the azaleas a year after we moved into this new house in 1975. They are so huge they are almost up to the guttering. The aluminum sulfate has helped them to thrive so much. Our house is 90' long and I planted azaleas all along the north side of the house. Such a beautiful sight each spring.
Speaking of needing pollinators, the only things I planted that need them are my American holly trees and my Ilex winterberry hollies...they need male and female trees to produce berries. And my blueberries as that is what the company said to do.
Our blueberries always ripen by 4th of July and continue for 3-4 weeks but most ripen in three weeks.
Blueberries like acid soil and I always used Aluminum Sulfate once a month from March thru July. Just used a tablespoon sprinkled a foot out from the base in a circle. Aluminum sulfate is used to
purify drinking water so no need to fear an aluminum issue. It is a white granular product and very easy to sprinkle around the blueberry bushes. I use it for my hollies, lilacs, all the pines/spruces, azaleas and probably some things I'm forgetting. I buy it in a 3# bag about anywhere gardening things are sold.I left out that the plants should be three 'different' varieties/names, not all the same for pollination.
When I planted our blueberry bushes nearly 40 years ago, the catalog said to plant three for proper pollination. I did and ours are over 6 feet tall. In later years, I planted some highbush blueberries.
The blueberry bushes are a favorite for fall color...so amazingly beautiful!
Joan...sorry to hear of Aunt Becky's death. I'm sure all of you will cherish memories of her special life.
Patty...it is so nice to see you here! I think of you when I see your temps in winter on TV.
Hoping your family is doing well. Is your son still an award-winning musician?
We are so ready for some warmth and nicer days. We have so much to get done outside but it rains or does some kind of precip nearly every day or it is miserably cold. Husband worked this afternoon on the end of the woodpile cutting and he is ready to cut down the grasses and work outside every day but this week will be chilly with several rainy days.
I so miss so many of the old BCers. Hope you visit us often!
Many years ago, when KAF discontinued mini lemon chips, I found them in 50# bags at http://www.cerealingredients.com. One of the BCers ordered one 50# and divided them up between several members but that was the last anyone saw of them anywhere. Nuts.com did sell regular sized lemon chips and the grocery stores did carry the regular lemon chips some of the time. But they were not at all like the mini lemon chips from KAF. Last time I looked at cerealingredients.com, they did sell the hard as rocks cinnamon bits that KAF did sell but they were tooth breakers to say the least. Seems like they also had 50# bags of the stuff like Bakers Cinnamon Filling in various flavors.
Joan...sending belated Happy Birthday wishes your way for your special day on March 1! Glad you had a wonderful time all day!

MaryAnn Cawley is Dachshundlady's name. When the BC shut down, she started a Facebook private group, Around Our Kitchen Table where several joined. You might like to check this out, Wonky, if you use Facebook. I don't do Facebook so this is all I know. I listed this at the bottom of the email list I sent out if anyone else is interested.
Italiancook...I think you'll be fine using white flour. Probably will be a finer texture than using whole wheat.
Italiancook...way back in this thread you mentioned wanting a blueberry bread recipe but couldn't find one. I have one here on this site and it uses 2 cups of blueberries. On the old BakingCircle, we had a dear member, maryclaire5, a pharmacist from St. Louis, whose family loved my recipe and requested it often. You can use part whole wheat flour.
Italiancook...we have a small orchard of red and golden delicious apples, three kinds of pears, blue plums, red plums, peaches, cherries and probably some I'm forgetting. I can certainly agree on the home grown fruits taste and quality. I quit buying apples a couple of years ago in the stores as they have no taste and never ripen no matter how long we wait. We liked to get some varieties we don't grow but it was a waste of money.
I grew up on a dairy farm and we made our own butter and had true buttermilk from that process. It looked like cloudy water with bits of butter floating along. Not tasty looking. I so appreciate the cultured buttermilk from the grocery stores.
We made our own cottage cheese, too.
Our butter was so good and I cannot stand butter sold in stores today. I cannot figure it but my husband says it is what the cows are fed. Could be. As a child, I ate butter at many homes thru the years and it was all good just like ours at home. Most everyone had a cow or two for milk and butter.
