Interesting video, Mike! I will not be making that kind of Strudel! I watched the episode of The Great British Baking Show where the bakers made the dough. Mine is a "shortcut" type. With the crust (instead of puff pastry) it's more like Apple pie. My family likes it so I'll not vary too far from that. I will try adding a little sugar to the next crust as Bakeraunt suggested. Thanks for the information and encouragement.

Last week I was browsing my old recipes and decided to make the Quick Apple Strudel from years ago. It was all eaten but I wasn't happy with the crust. Did some internet research and discovered some used puff pastry. So I gave it a try with Pepperidge Farms puff pastry from the freezer section. It was also good but I find I prefer the crust over the puff pastry. I will next be trying Bakeraunts buttermilk pie crust.

I also have a stack of the older magazines to browse through. I have one favorite recipe I found years ago that I still make every winter. It's for Potato Garlic Soup with Rosemary Butter. It's quick and delicious served with sourdough bread. Some of the newer recipes from various places use some really unusual combinations that I would never try. I'm glad not to be subscribed any longer.

Bakeraunt, my mother used to make the same salad while I was growing up (in Alabama). I also didn't pay attention to amounts or ingredients! However, I don't recall having oil in the dressing. She most likely used apple cider vinegar, probably added a little salt and nothing else. My Dad wanted his food simple and not fancy which is how she cooked. She rarely used recipes except for baked goods. If you find a good combination, I would be interested.

Thanks to Joan and Bakeraunt for posting their recipes for salmon patties. Bakeraunt's recipe sounds delicious, but Joan's is probably closer to what my mother used to make. She rarely used a recipe.
Joan, I'm also in the deep South in Mobile, Alabama. Not looking forward to the coming hurricane season.

Joan, your salmon patties caught my eye. Could you please post a brief description of ingredients used and how you cook them? My mother used to make them when I was a kid and I haven't tried them in years. Thanks. By the way, do you live in the South? Your menus remind me of my mother's cooking.

I have baked Libby's Pumpkin Roll for tomorrow. It is a recipe found on Libby's website that I have been making since at least 2003 and a family favorite. I also have KAF's Soft dinner rolls ready to bake in the morning. They are in the freezer and I will take them out to thaw tonight. I've done this in the past and they turn out great.
                  Happy Easter to everyone.

Bakeraunt, are your dried blueberries homemade or store bought? My three bushes produce so many, I can never use all the frozen ones. Drying them sounds like a good alternative. I also give away lots to friends and neighbors.

Thanks for the reminder. I didn't realize it had been so long since I logged in. I check in almost daily but don't post often.

This week I baked my family's favorite, Red Velvet cake, for my daughter's birthday. I know many object to the red color, but I have always used only one bottle (not two as called for in the original receipe). I got the recipe from my mother way back in the late '60's. I also have always made the original cooked frosting that isn't as sweet as buttercream. I did some research (on the internet of course) and found the name of the frosting to be Ermine frosting. Sounds fancy, doesn't it!!

I have made the Vienna bread but from a different recipe. As I recall (I don't keep good records like BakerAunt!), there were no problems with it. Fortunately for me, my family will eat most anything I bake.
I also checked a recipe I have for Dutch Crunch topping and it is almost identical to the one used by luvpyrpom.

BakerAunt, is your recipe for turkey pot pie posted? I make one also but it uses Campbell's cream of chicken soup. It makes a nice gravy, but I dislike their soups because of the salt. I also use leftover mashed potatoes for the topping. I still have some turkey in the freezer and with the cold weather coming up, it would be perfect.

Mike, thanks for suggesting the frozen peaches. I will try that next time I'm in the mood for peach cobbler. Also, thanks for posting that website for can sizes. They have changed quite a bit over the years.

I have the same addiction and have tons of cookbooks I will need to get rid of not too long in the future.

Happy birthday to Mrs. Nolan. My sons' birthday is coming up on the 18th.

Today I baked my Blueberry Buckle Coffeecake from the KAF website. I still have lots of frozen blueberries from the summer!
