I made the wheat, semolina, rye recipe from Len and BA. I wanted to try my new banneton so used that and slashed it just for the heck of it. Tastes good!

On Sunday, I baked Orange Biscotti with mini chocolate chips and pecans, using the Cara Cara oranges. I have been developing this recipe, and they really turned out well, even though the logs slightly baked into each other. I carefully separated them with a spatula before they cooled and I cut them to go back for the second bake.
I also decided to try that recipe for Butternut Squash and Pepita Breadsticks, but to make it as 12 rolls. I had to add an additional 2 Tbs. of buttermilk to the dough. The rolls came out great, although next time, I will cut the baking time from 30 minutes to about 28 minutes, as they were a slight bit dark on the sides.
March 16, 2026 at 6:36 pm #48789We have had snow on and off all day Monday. I made Maple Granola, just as we finished the previous batch. In the afternoon, I baked my version of King Arthur's Favorite Fudge Birthday cake. The two layers are now cooling. I will not, alas, be making that lovely high-fat ganache, but I will be making a chocolate glaze to spread between the layers and on top.

March 17, 2026 at 7:04 am #48793Thanks, Joan and BA.
March 17, 2026 at 1:08 pm #48796Your bread looks wonderful, Kimbob. It looks a little darker than mine, but I use white whole wheat, so that's probably the difference.
March 17, 2026 at 1:31 pm #48797Thanks, Len. I usually do use white ww but used regular ww this time. Tastes great!
March 17, 2026 at 7:13 pm #48801I always use regular whole wheat flour for that bread.
I made the chocolate glaze for Scott's cake on Tuesday morning, and we began the birthday celebration at teatime, although I have coffee with chocolate cake. We had more for dessert with dinner, this time with milk.
March 17, 2026 at 7:46 pm #48802Happy Birthday to Scott.
I had rotisserie chicken and some stove top stuffing and I'm not a fan of that.In the trash it went.
March 17, 2026 at 10:06 pm #48805Scott thanks you, Joan.
I agree with you about stove top stuffing. Yuk.
March 17, 2026 at 11:26 pm #48806Stove Top Stuffing was OK when it first came out, but it went downhill.
I've been tempted to make a batch of stuffing using the Pepperidge Farms herb cubed stuffing mix, freeze it in 2x2x2 cubes and get one out when I buy a rotisserie chicken and microwave it.
When I was in HS, my mother would take us to Dubuque to see a single-A baseball game, we'd stop at a local grocery store, buy a rotisserie chicken and a loaf of bread from their bakery, and have that for supper at the ballpark. Saw some pretty good players back then, including Tommy John, years before the surgery now named after him.
March 18, 2026 at 8:15 pm #48812I made dough for Whole Wheat Sourdough Cheese Crackers on Wednesday. I held back 12 grams of flour this time, as the dough has been drier when mixing with the Ankarsrum. I was happier with the consistency this time.

Wow Mike! We had Tommy John mugs from a give-away when he played with the White Sox.
I made ciabatta and pizza dough this week. I made challah and tried a 4 strand brade which I haven't done in years. I made two loaves. The first was a little wonky the second better. The dough was too dry so I stuck the ends together with extra water. I'll do more next week. My goal is to get up to six strands. Violet's bat mitzvah is in July and she has decided I will make the challah for it.
I made a new, salty shortbread recipe from Serious eats. They use brown sugar instead of white but that's not new. I think the first person I saw do that was Dorie Greenspan about 20 years ago. I subbed out the regular butter for brown butter. The dough was a little crumbly but I "utzed it together" as my mom would have said. They also did not spread. I wonder if the brown butter caused either or both of these. They did taste good.
March 20, 2026 at 1:35 pm #48822I don't know if they used radar guns in the minor leagues back in the 60's, but Tommy John had an outrageous fastball back then, with some control issues, and a curveball that brought to mind the Whitey Ford comment to some scientist who claimed baseballs didn't curve: Stand behind a telephone pole and I'll whomp you to death!
Tommy John was pretty unhittable and moved up the ladder to the major leagues fairly quickly.
