I saw this Epicurious post and recipe for "Savory Gruyere Bread with Ham." I could see that as a good picnic bread, or maybe as dinner with a salad:

Interesting. I think the success of that recipe will depend on what ham you use. A lot of the hams they sell today are pumped up with a lot of water which might leach out into the loaf as it bakes.
This sounds wonderful, and perfect to go with summer salads. I've put it on my short-list, probably within a week. It's sort of like a savory scone, but less fussy to prepare. Thanks for sharing!
Ooh - that does look good. Adding to my "to try" list. I really need things like that now. Thinking you could add chicken sausage or as they suggested, olives - yum - might even bring home some pimento cheese from work.
