An interesting discussion of why Honey Crisp Apples are no longer so great:
Interesting story, thanks for sharing.
The honeycrisps here don't seem to have developed this bitter pit issue yet, but I generally stop buying them in May or June anyway, waiting for the next year's crop.
Sad is a good word. Can folks in Minnesota enjoy the original honey crisps during its growing season?
Interesting article. I don't buy honey crisps here in Georgia - the couple of times I tried them, they were very disappointing. I remember trying them at home when they were first available seasonally and I really enjoyed them.
I remember getting HoneyCrisps in Virginia ages ago and being very impressed by the sweetness and flavor. They were almost too sweet for my taste. There were other varieties I preferred. I have been seeing more and more HoneyCrisps in the supermarket and other HoneyCrisp knockoffs. I'll avoid HoneyCrisps except in the late fall after reading this article.
My husband favors Ever Crisp apples, which I seem to recall are a cross with Honey Crisp and another apple. We buy them in November at an apple orchard about an hour from here, and he happily munches them into January or February. I have gotten to the point where I do not buy apples out of season anymore.
