We went out for lunch at the St. Petersburg pier today with one of my husband's cousins and her husband. We went to Doc Ford's Rum Bar and Grill. My husband had the grilled Grouper sandwich with slaw on the side. I had the white fish soft tacos, with a papaya salsa that I was told was not that spicy. It came with black beans and rice. The cousin and her husband each ordered a green salad and an appetizer of calamari. The restaurant used to have a calamari salad, which they discontinued, so this way, they make their own! The food is great, and we were able to sit on the covered terrace outside, where there were many chattering parrots, which were landing on vacant tables. We could have taken our dog there with us, but she does not care for noise, so she stayed in the car under covered parking, which has solar panels on its roof! I certainly recommend the restaurant, although I had a bit of heartburn, mostly from the beans and rice. Clearly, I should have had some key lime pie!

The restaurant, one of three, were started by a mystery author, and Doc Ford is the protagonist of what I think are 24 books. Apparently, the character hangs out at a couple of restaurants. They sell the books at the restaurant. I may get a couple from the library and give them a try for lighter reading,

The Doc Ford Mystery series, by Randy Wayne White. Not one I've read, but I may have to look into them as well. The protagonist is a marine biologist and former CIA agent.

He has written several mystery series, under multiple author names, and also wrote the Gulf Coast Cookbook.

I read at least 10 of the Doc Ford series several years ago. I was hooked. A friend gave them to me and I read them in order. Now I can't remember the last one I read.

On another note we are not going to our annual haunt this year (Madeira Beach). Due to 2 hurricanes the building we rent in lost their pool for who knows how long and several units including the one we rent suffered water damage in some walls and were without power for several days. I read comments on facebook and the natives are trying to get people to come down while others are saying things are still dismal. ? How was St Petersburg?

Navlys--Most of the state parks are closed but being worked on. We usually meet the cousins at Fort DeSoto for a picnic lunch and hike, but only the boat ramp is open. The Florida Botanical Gardens here are open and decorated for Christmas, but they continue to clean up damage. Damage depends on where you are. The small place we are staying in Indian Rocks did not get any damage, but walking north, we saw plenty of it. Some places in the town were hit harder than others. We see lots of Florida license plates but not as many out of state ones as I recall from past visits. In this area, they are starting dune reconstruction, as the hurricane took them out.

We only drove in the very crowded downtown area of St. Petersburg to get to the restaurant and back, so I can't say how the beach is there. On our way back to here, we missed our exit due to a missing sign probably taken out by the hurricane and so did the "scenic" route home.

I'm pretty sure I read all of John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee books, though I'm missing a couple of them now. I recently reread several of them, somehow they're just not as enjoyable as they were 40 years ago, but as I recall the last few in the series were a bit disappointing even back then. Rumors of an unpublished book (with 'black' as the color in the title) that ended the series continue to circulate, though the MacDonald estate has denied its existence many times.

A continuing series of books is a challenge for an author, sometimes they just run out of new ideas, and reading them, or especially rereading them, makes you realize how repetitive the series has become.
