I have noticed that a number of mini waffle irons are popping up on Amazon and other places. There are variations on them such as grilled sandwich makers and flat surface grills. Without looking at reviews I decided to buy one, the Tasty Mini Waffle Maker. It's promoted as being good for waffles, hash browns, brownies "and more".
I found that it heats up fast and bakes the waffle fairly fast as well. The problem is that it bakes very unevenly.
The waffle was pale at the top when the lower part was done. It's even more uneven than the pic shows because I turned the waffle around to try to get a more even result. The next thing I tried was hash browns, which is the main reason I bought it. The results were the same. I kept the potato in longer until the top part browned a bit, but by then the lower part was overdone, hard and dry.
There is another brand of mini makers called the Dash. Based on the reviews I have seen, it looks more promising, including some models that have multiple removeable plates. I really should have researched this a little more but I only paid $12.

March 16, 2025 at 4:17 pm #45813I hadn't heard of a waffle bowl maker so I had to look it up. I couldn't find the Dash but there are a number of other brands. It sounds very interesting, one review said you can use corn bread batter to make taco bowls! I have to give this serious consideration.

I did try a Dash mini-waffle maker one some years ago. I thought it was defective, but I later learned, after I took it back for a refund, that one of the plugs in the kitchen (before we remodeled) wasn't working correctly, so it might not have been the Dash appliance.
Of course, I like making a batch of waffles and stashing the extras in the freezer for quick breakfasts.
I have been looking at the Greenpan ceramic waffle makers, but they are not Belgium waffles, which I prefer. My old waffle maker, going on 35 years still works well as long as I oil the plates.March 24, 2025 at 2:25 pm #45893One of the things I want in a new waffle maker is removeable plates to make cleanup easier. I looked at a number of options. I decided to not waffle around any longer and made a decision. I bought a Cuisinart that has removeable plates and comes with additional (mostly) flat plates that they call pancake plates. The bottom plate has small slightly indented circles (4). It's suggested that it can used for pancakes (really small ones) eggs, sausage etc. I might use that to make grilled cheese but otherwise I don't see myself using those as I have better options for pancakes, eggs, sausage etc. They really didn't need to put the circles on the plate.
So I made waffles today. They came out great, somewhat crispy - not limp at all - and moist on the inside. And cooked to the correct level of brown for my taste (it has a dial to control the browning).
Some of the color on that waffle is due to being whole wheat and a fair dose of cinnamon (I opened the jar over the batter and some jumped out, more than I normally would use).
I have to work on getting the amount of batter right, I came up a little short. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with this. Now I have to find room for it.
