Saw this on the web and can't see a use for any of the latest 14 must have gadgets. Another silly thing on Facebook ads is wax covered cloth to preserve bread. I think the reason bread lasted longer 50 years ago is that bread was eaten faster in the days where there were 2.5 kids and each kid had 1.8 friends who were hungry 150% of the time.

So bread didn't last longer, it was eaten faster.

Waxed cloth is being presented as an alternative to plastic bags in my neck of the woods.

There are silicon storage bags for produce too. Lots of stuff to replace single use plastic bags (which I use more than once, anyway).

I could be completely wrong, but see those ads all the time and I don't believe them. In a lot of older cookbooks there are recipes that use stale bread. Stuffing, croutons, bread pudding, French Toast. So there wasn't a magical method of keeping bread longer.

None of this is impressive to me.

Waste of money and space. I was really hopeful about the waxed fabric - I couldn't get it to seal tightly enough to protect the food. Also, the silicone lids that are supposed to stay tight with suction.

I was also underwhelmed by this list of kitchen gadgets. I think it was compiled by an influencer who gets financial rewards. That is one reason I unsubscribed from the Serious Eats newsletter: too much selling of gadgets. I do like having a kitchen scale, but so far, the one I bought at Ross nearly 20 years ago is doing well. I tried a scale with a larger weighing area from King Arthur over ten years ago and hated it, as it had no toggle on top for going from grams to English weights (it was on the underside of the scale!), then the batteries leaked, and it was gone. I've stuck with the small scale ever since, although as Mike has mentioned, sometimes I have to put the bowl on something on the platform in order to be able to read it.

I do have some silicone lids, but those are for temporary covering or microwaving. They do not seal well enough to keep smells out of the refrigerator.
