BA I know how much you like Penzey's as do I. I bought 2 of those $50 gift cards for $70. I just received my latest order. Most of the expiration dates were 2026 or 2027. The jar of roasted garlic powder expires October of this year. Never one to let anything go I called Penzey's and explained my dilemma . After I was put on hold for a short time I was told that that was an acceptable date and that their spices can actually still be good after 10 years. I was trying to picture tasting that spice after 10 years! Not a happy camper!
May 4, 2025 at 6:30 pm #46219Navlys--the dates on sealed spice bottles are probably like most of the dates on food. The government requires the expiration date, but most of the food is fine beyond that date. I found a jar of Penzey's Now Curry late last year that is probably years old. It was unopened, and I didn't notice a difference. I don't remember when I opened my Penzey's garlic powder, or onion powder, or Sunny Paris--it's been a while--but they are still fine. I also buy Penzey's spices in bags and re-fill my jars because it is cheaper. Again, I have not noticed a difference. If the dates still bother you, send a direct email to Bill Penzey and suggest he address the subject in one of his emails. Most of us just don't go through spices at breakneck speed. When I read cooking columns that suggest tossing spices after a year, I think to myself that these people have too much disposable income.
For lunch on Sunday, I cooked a cup of dried penne pasta. I mixed it with the slightly warmed roasted asparagus, cherry tomatoes, and mushrooms I made last night and added a bit of pasta water and 2 oz. of feta left over from last week's frittata. I will be able to get two additional lunches from it.
I made coleslaw on Sunday to go with ham sandwiches for dinner. Kroger has had some very nice organically grown cabbages.
May 4, 2025 at 7:24 pm #46220We had spaghetti with meat sauce and cheese toast.
May 4, 2025 at 8:45 pm #46224Navlys, I agree with BakerAunt. I have some Penzey's spices I've had for quite a few years and I find that their spices last much better than the ones from the supermarket. The only time I toss them is if they have clumped together because of moisture. I buy the bags as well.
I made stuffed portobello mushrooms for dinner tonight and I have leftovers for a few days. They are stuffed with chopped mushrooms, shallots and spinach with melted cheese - very filling. I had quartered Campari tomatoes (on sales) with Penzey's lemon pepper for my "side."
May 4, 2025 at 9:26 pm #46225Expired dates don't bother me either., I have some very old spices too.If I open a can and it spews I toss it or it's bent badly.
I went to my friends today and her daughter made us smoked chicken and sausage, coleslaw, baked beans ,bacon wrapped stuffed with cream cheese jalapenos and rolls. It was delicious.
May 5, 2025 at 8:08 am #46227Thanks for your positive words vis a vis the expiration on spices. Spices do lose their punch over time but maybe not enough to make a big difference.
Last night I made FC"s pork tenderloin with a maple hoisin glaze. It was a bit of work getting all the ingredients together but it was well worth it!May 5, 2025 at 12:14 pm #46228It's interesting, this discussion on spices. Recently, I heard a cooking show host say that as long as spices smell potent, they're good even if expired. This host did say, however, that if they're expired, she uses more than the recipe calls for. Sorry, I don't recall which cooking show host.
May 5, 2025 at 12:29 pm #46230Last night I made meatballs, a pound of ground beef, 1/3 cup of panko bread crumbs with an equal amount of milk, a sprinkle of garlic powder, a few shakes of oregano, a generous dose of dried parsley, an egg and a shake of A1 sauce. I portioned it into 12 balls of 50 grams each. I sauteed some onion and green peppers and then added jarred pasta sauce to it. I browned the meatballs in a skillet and then finished them in the sauce.
I have enough left for the next couple of days.
May 5, 2025 at 6:43 pm #46236That dinner sounds good, Len! And "planned overs" are always good!
For dinner on Monday, I made Turkey Zucchini Loaf with Peach-Dijon glaze, using thawed frozen zucchini. I also roasted sweet potato chunks alongside the meatloaf. We had coleslaw on the side. And we have planned overs as well!
May 5, 2025 at 6:49 pm #46238We both had big salads for supper. I'm trying to get back on the keto diet again, it's challenging

Tonight I had a meatball sandwich on a freshly baked bun, green beans and carrots.
