Many of us have one or more of Maida Heatter's cookbooks in our collection, she was often called the Queen of Cake. A self-taught baker, she would hand out brownies as business cards. She died on June 6th, at 102. New York Times food critic Craig Clairborne, an early supporter who encouraged her to write her first cookbook, once called her the foremost food authority in Florida.
Never heard the giving out brownie stories. I heard Famous Amos talk about bringing cookies to all of his business meetings. Neat ideas.
Any business meeting goes better with cookies!
I have one of her cookbooks that I bought a couple years ago at an estate sale. I need to see if there is a recipe in it that I can bake.
A cookbook editor remembers Maida Haatter:
The book 'Recipes Into Type' may be out-of-print, but there appear to be plenty of used copies available online. It's on my list of things to order now. (I'm still working through the last three books I ordered, so it'll be a month or two before I order it.)
I've been baking her shortbread cookies since the '80's. It's always been a family favorite. I also have one of her cookbooks, Book of Great Cookies published 1977. I'll have to pick another recipe from it in her memory.
