True or false: Smelt can be eaten whole.

I answered correctly. I've never eaten one, and as of now, I have no plans to do so.
I got it.
My mother loved smelt. She's split them open and gut them, because she didn't like the taste of that part, then bread and fry them.
I haven't seen them in stores since we moved to Nebraska. The California Grunion run should be occurring in the next few weeks, will people violate the remain-in-place order to harvest them?
I missed it,didn't know anything about them,but I'm learning!
When smelts are in season on the shore of Lake Michigan in Chicago, the people crowd the lake shore to cast their nets, sometimes whole families, and it's not uncommon to see some of them swallow those things whole, fresh out of the water.
I have had breaded and fried smelt in restaurants, not bad but not my favorite.
