I'm trying a new recipe for Chicken Chili that I ripped out of a Martha Stewart Magazine at least 10 years ago or more (I haven't bought an issue since). I will let you know how it turns out. And I'm making cornbread to go with it.
December 1, 2024 at 5:41 pm #44823Leftovers again.Ham, dressing, cranberry sauce, collards and cornbread and Watergate salad.
December 1, 2024 at 6:27 pm #44824Since Watergate Salad is still on the menu, Joan, I'll share my experience with it. During the last century I often visited my sister in Atlanta. The treat she and her husband gave me each visit was to take me to the Blue Willow Inn. It was about an hour from their home with pleasant scenery. The excellence of the Blue Willow's food made the long wait to enter the dining room worth it. I especially loved their fried green tomatoes but never tasted anything I didn't like. Early this century, my sister sent me the Blue Willow Inn Cookbook. That led me to make Watergate Salad for a sister-in-law. She enjoyed it so much she asked for the recipe. I have no idea if the Blue Willow Inn is still operating. If not, it's a loss for restaurant-goers. I'm grateful to have their recipes.
December 1, 2024 at 6:45 pm #44827I thought the turkey noodle soup came out pretty good, Diane wasn't as fond of it, but she's not a big fan of turkey in general, though she did have two small bowls of it. Making a small batch of semolina noodles brought the carbs up to about 11 grams and 135 calories per 400 gram bowl of soup, which is OK as far as I'm concerned.
December 1, 2024 at 7:35 pm #44829The chili had a nice flavor but we both agreed it wasn't worth the effort to make it again. I'm glad I finally tried it - I threw the recipe away ๐
December 1, 2024 at 8:31 pm #44830Italiancook I've never heard of the Blue Willow Inn but Googled it and it's suppose to reopen in 2025.I'm glad you liked the southern food and I love fried green tomatoes.I looked at the cook book online.
December 1, 2024 at 9:04 pm #44836We had rotisserie chicken and potato salad from Walmart, along with microwaved frozen peas on Sunday It was good to have a regular dinner after two days on the road with soup for dinner.
December 1, 2024 at 9:42 pm #44839I had a late lunch (burger) so I just had chicken veg soup for dinner.
December 2, 2024 at 2:37 pm #44842I'm glad the Blue Willow Inn will reopen. I wonder if the Inn will open with different owners. I'll never know; my sister is now deceased. No more trips to Atlanta.
December 2, 2024 at 6:44 pm #44846I bought a small ham the other day thinking it was pre-sliced, went to open it just before bedtime last night and discovered that it wasn't sliced. So rather than use it for lunches we had some ham for supper. I sliced up some ham for a sandwich for me and Diane diced some ham for an omelet.
December 2, 2024 at 6:45 pm #44847Italiancook the article I read said the Blue Willow had been sold and new partners would reopen it.
I had turkey sandwich and chips for supper.
December 3, 2024 at 2:59 pm #44854We re-ran Monday night's dinner on Tuesday.
December 3, 2024 at 5:36 pm #44855I had a ham sandwich and an ear of corn ๐ฝ.
December 3, 2024 at 10:04 pm #44860Last night, I made broth from the remains of the rotisserie chicken. On Tuesday, I used that broth when I cooked brown rice in my rice cooker. (I take the rice cooker when we travel, as it quickly warms up soup in motel rooms, and I find rice a versatile ingredient when I cook on vacation. While the rice was cooking, I sauteed chopped celery, carrots, red bell pepper, and sliced mushrooms in olive oil, then added the leftover chicken and some thyme. The skillet at the place we are renting is only a medium size, but I found a large casserole dish in which I could layer the rice and the chicken-vegetable mixture. Leftovers for tomorrow give us more time for adventure.
I used a brown rice from Castor River Habitat and Farm in Missouri that I bought at Fresh Thyme Market when we were in South Bend in October. It was on sale, so I grabbed several bags and brought one with us because it was a small bag. We really liked the texture, and it was not as starchy as most rice. It's nice to be able to support a small agricultural business.
