My husband planted two of the organic yellow potatoes from a bag that I bought. They both have a lot of bushy green foliage. He is wondering if he should stake the green part or just let it be. A storm would likely knock it down. We know that in fields, potatoes just grow as they are, but should we use cages in a garden situation? They are about 18 inches tall.
I never staked my potatoes; they didn't grow tall stems such as tomatoes, peas, etc. I've never seen on any of the gardening blogs I read that gardeners are staking them. I just hoed up dirt around the stem of the plant, without disturbing the dirt that is just above the actual potatoe(s). I no longer grow potatoes.
Thanks, Chocomouse.
