INSTRUCTIONS
A traditional hamburg bread for Christmas, but good at any time
1 cup mild molasses
½ cup brown sugar
1 cup milk
12 oz. light rye flour
3 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. each ground cloves, cardamom
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 oz. kandis ( large crystals) brown
combine molasses, sugar and milk in saucepan, heat until sugar is dissolved but do not boil! Let cool a bit, then add flour, baking powder & spices, stir, then knead until a smooth dough forms. Put in greased 10 inch loaf pan, sprinkle with kandis and bake for 55 min at 300°. Let cool 5 min in pan, then turn out onto rack. Serve with butter or honey butter
