California accounts for about 80% of the world's almond production, but according to an article in today's Wall Street Journal growers in California are cutting down some of their almond groves because of the latest water shortages.
This is likely to result in a decrease in the almond crop, which probably means shortages and higher prices. More almonds are being used for making things like almond milk, which is more profitable, than for making almond butter, which may also affect the mix of what's available.
I consider almond milk a waste of good almonds. I enjoy almonds as a calcium snack, so I am sorry that the price is going to increase. I am also fond of almond butter, which I prefer to peanut butter due to the calcium and the lower saturated fat.
The drought in California is devastating.
